Add Simple Captions and Alt Text to Your Photos So AI Understands Your Work

Your photos can speak for you in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. I will show you how to write short captions and alt text that help AI describe and recommend your work.

Add Simple Captions and Alt Text to Your Photos So AI Understands Your Work

Why your photos need clear words

I want to show you something important. I checked a bakery in Berlin last week. Their site had many photos. Cakes, happy customers, a new oven. But the photos had no captions. The file names were IMG_4421.jpg and final_final2.jpg. When someone asked ChatGPT for a good bakery nearby, that bakery did not appear. The owner did not know. That is the problem I help people fix.

AI looks at your words first. Then it looks at your images. If a photo has a clear caption and alt text, AI can understand it. It can say what you do, where you do it, and what result you give. That makes you easier to recommend.

Action for today: pick your 10 most important photos. We will write one clear caption and one clear alt text for each.

What to write in captions and alt text

Keep it simple. One short sentence is enough. Say the service, the location, and the result. If useful, add the product brand or model. Do not stuff many keywords. Write like a human.

Use this tiny template:

  • [Service] in [Neighborhood/City] — [Result/Proof]. Optional: [Brand/Model], [Month/Year].

Examples:

  • “Emergency drain unclog in Queens — kitchen back to normal in 2 hours. May 2026.”
  • “Custom birthday cake in Kreuzberg — gluten‑free chocolate with fresh berries. 2026.”
  • “Heat pump install in North Austin — reduced bill by 28% after 30 days. Daikin.”

Alt text should match the caption, but you can add one more detail. Alt text is for screen readers and for AI that cannot see the image well.

Action for today: write 10 captions and 10 matching alt texts using the template.

Where to add it (and how to name files)

Add captions under the image on your page. Add alt text in the image settings.

  • On WordPress: click the image, open settings, fill “Alt Text” and “Caption.”
  • On Shopify: open Files or the product page, fill “Alt Text.” Use the caption field on sections that support it.
  • On Google Business Profile: write a short description in the photo text field when you upload.

Now fix file names. AI and search tools read them. Rename files before you upload. Use simple words and dashes.

Do:

  • vanilla-cupcakes-catering-berlin-trays.jpg

Do not:

  • IMG_9912.jpg
  • final-edited-V2(1).jpg

Give each photo clear context on the page

A good caption is strong. A caption with context is stronger. Put photos near the words that match them. If the page is about “Water Heater Repair,” show repair photos there. Use simple section titles like “Recent Repairs in Plano.”

Other quick wins:

  • If a photo is “before” or “after,” say it in the caption.
  • If a photo shows a brand or model, name it once in the caption.
  • If a photo shows a place, name the neighborhood or city.
  • Keep images clear and not too dark. Crop out clutter.

You do not need special photo data or codes. Plain words right under the image work well for AI and for people.

How to check if it worked

Give it a few days. Then check. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok: “Based on this website, what services does [Your Brand] do, and where?” See if it mentions the services and places from your captions. Ask: “Describe two recent jobs they show with results.” See if it uses your words.

I also built FoxRadar to make this easy. With FoxRadar, you can see in 60 seconds whether ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok know your brand and what they say. If they miss a service, add one more clear photo and caption to that page. Then check again.

Action for today: ask one AI to describe your work from your site, and run a quick FoxRadar check.

Here is what I see every day: business owners who work hard but do not show up in AI at all. You can fix that with clear words under your photos. Trust me on this — it takes less time than you think. Check how you show up today at getfoxradar.com.
